How many legs does a caterpillar have? The answer may surprise you!
A caterpillar usually has 16 legs: three pairs of true legs and five pairs of "prolegs"! Prolegs are different than "true" legs in that they are not segmented, acting more like suction cups than jointed appendages! Despite not being "true" legs these are still incredibly important tools for every individual caterpillar, allowing them to hook into surfaces and find the tastiest snacks! In fact, caterpillars walk more on these prolegs than their "true" legs!
