Is there an ant king?Updated 8 months ago
Ant colonies always have a queen, but do they have a king as well? You might be surprised to learn that they don't, ants live in a matriarchal society. There are three types of ants in a colony:
- The Queen
- Female workers
- Male drones
Each ant has a particular role that helps their colony function. The majority of ants in the colony are female workers, who build tunnels, find food, and tend to the young ants. Male drones have wings, and their job is to mate with the queen. They often die soon after mating. The queen ant is the only ant that lays eggs, and the colony cannot function without her as she is the one who gives orders to the colony. If a queen ant dies, she is not replaced, as the worker ants cannot reproduce and the colony will not survive.
Note: Your Ant Mountain™ will not come with a queen ant.
