What is the difference between a moth and a butterfly?Updated 2 years ago

Butterflies and moths may look similar, and they both fall under the classification Lepidoptera, but they are two distinct species. There are few ways you can tell the difference between these two fluttering insects.

  • Butterflies are active during the day (diurnal) while moths are more active at night (nocturnal).
  • Butterflies rest with their wings closed, unless they’re enjoying some sunshine, while moths rest with their wings open.
  • Moth’s antennae are shaped like a feather, while butterfly’s antennae are long and come straight up from their heads.
  • The majority of moths spin a cocoon out of silk, the majority of butterflies emerge from a hard chrysalis.
  • Moths tend to be fuzzy, while butterflies have smooth bodies.

There you have it! The next time you see a fluttering friend, you'll know how to tell if it's a butterfly or a moth.
